Enter fence dimensions to estimate materials.

Fence formulas used

Fence run = total length – total gate width
Sections = ceiling(fence run / panel length)
Line posts = ceiling(fence run / post spacing) – 1
Pickets = ceiling(fence run / spacing per picket)

The calculator adds corner/end posts and two gate posts per gate. Add extra waste for slopes, cuts, bracing and local installation rules.

Fence planning tips

  • Measure each straight run separately when the yard is not rectangular.
  • Check property lines and local permit rules before buying materials.
  • Sloped ground may require stepped panels or custom post heights.
  • Order extra pickets, rails and fasteners for cuts and mistakes.

Fence Calculator FAQ

How many fence posts do I need?

The calculator estimates corner/end posts, gate posts and line posts based on your spacing.

How many panels do I need?

Panels are estimated by dividing usable fence run by panel length and rounding up.

Should gate width be included?

Yes. Enter total fence length including gates, then enter the number and width of gates so the calculator can subtract the gate opening.

How much extra material should I buy?

A 5 to 10 percent waste allowance is common for many projects, but complex layouts may need more.

Does this replace a contractor estimate?

No. It is a planning tool. Final materials depend on terrain, local code, fence style and installation method.
