Cat Food Calculator

Estimate your cat’s daily calories and split them between dry food and wet food. Get dry cups or grams, wet cans or pouches, per-meal amounts and treat limits.

Use current weight or vet target weight.
Converted to kilograms for RER.
Select the closest starting point.
Use the exact value from the bag.
Optional but useful for gram portions.
Enter calories per container.
Split by calories, not volume.
Used for per-meal portions.
Keep treats small for cats.

This is a starting estimate. Cats should not lose weight quickly; ask your veterinarian before starting a weight-loss plan.

How the cat food estimate works

The calculator uses RER = 70 x kg^0.75, then applies a multiplier for indoor, active, kitten or weight-loss situations. It subtracts treat calories and splits the remaining calories between wet and dry food.

  • Measure food with a scale when possible for better accuracy.
  • Use the calories from the exact food label.
  • Track weight and body condition over time.

Cat feeding tips

  • Many indoor cats need fewer calories than package estimates suggest.
  • Wet food can help some cats increase water intake, but calorie density varies.
  • If your cat has kidney disease, diabetes, urinary issues or obesity, follow veterinary guidance.

The RER formula is described by the Merck Veterinary Manual. Body condition and nutrition assessment tools are available from the WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines.

Cat Food Calculator FAQ

How many calories should my cat eat per day?

This calculator estimates calories using RER and a cat-specific activity or life-stage multiplier. Indoor, neutered and overweight cats often need fewer calories than active or growing cats.

What formula does the Cat Food Calculator use?

It uses RER = 70 x body weight in kilograms to the 0.75 power, then applies the selected multiplier to estimate daily calories.

Can I mix wet and dry food?

Yes. Enter the calorie density for dry food and wet food, then choose the wet-food calorie percentage. The calculator splits the daily calorie target between them.

Should cats lose weight quickly?

No. Rapid weight loss can be dangerous for cats. Any weight-loss plan should be supervised by a veterinarian.
