Powerful Body Fat Percentage Calculator

What is a Body Fat Percentage Calculator?

A Body Fat Percentage Calculator is a tool that estimates the proportion of your body mass that is made up of fat. This tool uses your age, sex, weight, and height to provide a rough estimate of your body fat percentage.

Why Use a Body Fat Percentage Calculator?

Using a Body Fat Percentage Calculator can help you understand your body composition better. Knowing your body fat percentage is crucial for maintaining good health and fitness. It helps you track your progress and make informed decisions about your diet and exercise routine.

How to Calculate Body Fat?

You can estimate your body composition with our Body Fat Percentage Calculator. Remember that no calculator, however complicated, can replace a visit to a doctor’s office. You should treat this result as a rough estimate; it can only tell you if your body fat percentage is drastically too high, but there’s no reason to panic if the result differs slightly from the recommended value.

To calculate the body fat percentage, you need to gather the following data:

  • Your age & sex.
  • Weight: simply weigh yourself. You will get the most accurate result weighing yourself in the morning, before breakfast, and without clothes on.
  • Height: stand straight and measure the distance from the floor to the top of your head. Remember – no shoes!

Once you have gathered all the data, you can input them all into the Body Fat Percentage Calculator. If you are interested in how it works, here is the formula we use:

\[ \begin{aligned} \text{Body fat \%} &= -44.988 + (0.503 \times \text{age}) + (10.689 \times \text{sex}) \\ &+ (3.172 \times \text{BMI}) – (0.026 \times \text{BMI}^2) + (0.181 \times \text{BMI} \times \text{sex}) \\ &- (0.02 \times \text{BMI} \times \text{age}) – (0.005 \times \text{BMI}^2 \times \text{sex}) + (0.00021 \times \text{BMI}^2 \times \text{age}) \end{aligned} \]

where:

  • \(\text{Sex value}: \text{male} = 0 \text{ and female} = 1\)
  • \(\text{BMI} = \frac{\text{weight}}{\text{height}^2} \left[\frac{\text{kg}}{\text{m}^2}\right]\)

This equation was validated by the American Diabetes Association. It was tested on 6,510 people and showed an estimated error of 4.66%.

Remember, due to the different body types of the population, the estimation might not be 100% accurate! For example, an extremely muscular person will have high weight and BMI values, yet we can’t say that such a person is obese.

Examples of Body Fat Percentage Calculations

Let’s look at some examples to understand how the Body Fat Percentage Calculator works.

Example 1: Female (Metric)

Age: 30
Sex: Female
Weight: 65 kg
Height: 165 cm

First, calculate the BMI:

\[ \text{BMI} = \frac{65}{1.65^2} \approx 24.11 \]

Now, apply the formula:

\[ \begin{aligned} \text{Body fat \%} &= -44.988 + (0.503 \times 30) + (10.689 \times 1) + (3.172 \times 24.11) \\ &- (0.026 \times 24.11^2) + (0.181 \times 24.11 \times 1) – (0.02 \times 24.11 \times 30) \\ &- (0.005 \times 24.11^2 \times 1) + (0.00021 \times 24.11^2 \times 30) \\ &\approx 22.57\% \end{aligned} \]

Input these values into the calculator to get your body fat percentage.

Example 2: Male (US)

Age: 25
Sex: Male
Weight: 176 lbs
Height: 68 in

First, convert the weight and height to metric:

\[ \text{Weight} = 176 \times 0.453592 \approx 79.83 \text{ kg} \]
\[ \text{Height} = 68 \times 0.0254 \approx 1.73 \text{ m} \]

Now, calculate the BMI:

\[ \text{BMI} = \frac{79.83}{1.73^2} \approx 26.75 \]

Apply the formula:

\[ \begin{aligned} \text{Body fat \%} &= -44.988 + (0.503 \times 25) + (10.689 \times 0) + (3.172 \times 26.75) \\ &- (0.026 \times 26.75^2) + (0.181 \times 26.75 \times 0) – (0.02 \times 26.75 \times 25) \\ &- (0.005 \times 26.75^2 \times 0) + (0.00021 \times 26.75^2 \times 25) \\ &\approx 21.01\% \end{aligned} \]

Input these values into the calculator to get your body fat percentage.

Interpreting Your Body Fat Percentage

Once you calculated your body fat percentage, you should compare it with the recommended values. The list below comes from the American Council on Exercise and shows the average percentages in specified groups.

Category Women (%) Men (%)
Essential fat 10-13 2-5
Athletes 14-20 6-13
Fitness 21-24 14-17
Average 25-31 18-24
Obese 32+ 25+

This data means that if your body fat percentage is lower than 31% for women and 24% for men, you are in the average range, and you have nothing to worry about. Higher levels of body fat may be dangerous for you.
