Pixel density & print studio

Calculate screen density, physical dimensions and viewing distance, compare displays, plan print sizes and convert PPI to PPCM.

Density depends on viewing distance
The viewing-distance estimate uses one arcminute as a theoretical reference and is not a guarantee of visual acuity.

How PPI is calculated

Diagonal pixels are divided by the physical diagonal in inches. The same density divided by 2.54 gives PPCM.

PPI is not the same as DPI

PPI describes pixels in an image or display. DPI normally describes physical dots placed by a printer.

CSS pixels can differ from device pixels

High-density screens can use several physical device pixels for one CSS pixel. DPR expresses this ratio.

Formulas

PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal(in)
PPCM = PPI ÷ 2.54
pixel pitch(mm) = 25.4 ÷ PPI

PPI calculator FAQ

How do I calculate PPI?

Divide the diagonal pixel count by the screen diagonal in inches.

How do I convert PPI to PPCM?

Divide PPI by 2.54. To convert PPCM back to PPI, multiply by 2.54.

What is pixel pitch?

Pixel pitch is the physical distance between neighboring pixels. In millimeters it equals 25.4 divided by PPI.

Is PPI the same as DPI?

No. PPI describes image or display pixels, while DPI generally describes printer dots.

How large can I print an image?

Divide the pixel width and height by the selected PPI to estimate the physical print dimensions.
