Exact elapsed time and calendar difference

Exact elapsed time counts the real seconds between two moments. Calendar difference describes the interval using years, months and days, whose lengths are not constant. Keeping these results separate prevents common date-calculation mistakes.

Exact duration

Exact duration is based on UTC instants, so it correctly includes a lost or repeated hour during a daylight-saving transition.

Calendar duration

Calendar duration follows the clock and calendar in one time zone. One calendar month may contain 28, 29, 30 or 31 days.

Time zones and daylight saving

Choose the named zone for each local time. Two identical clock readings can represent different moments when their UTC offsets differ.

Weekdays and weekends

The calendar summary counts every date touched by the interval in the start time zone. It is a planning aid, not a business-day or payroll rule.

Useful examples

  • 09:00 to 17:00 on the same day is exactly 8 hours.
  • 22:00 to 06:00 the next day is an overnight interval of 8 hours.
  • Across a daylight-saving change, the clock difference and exact elapsed time can differ by one hour.

What happens when the end is earlier than the start?

The calculator preserves the direction, explains that the end precedes the start, and displays the absolute duration for easy comparison.

Why can a one-day clock interval be 23 or 25 hours?

A daylight-saving transition can skip or repeat one local hour. The exact result uses the real UTC instants and therefore reflects that change.

What is the difference between calendar days and total days?

Total days divide exact elapsed seconds by 86,400. Calendar days describe dates in a selected time zone, so they answer a different question.

How are weekdays and weekend dates counted?

The calculator counts the calendar dates touched in the start time zone, including both boundary dates. It does not remove holidays.

Can I compare two different time zones?

Yes. Assign the correct named time zone to each local date and time. The calculator converts both to UTC before finding the difference.

Does the calculator store my dates?
