Formula and calculation

RPM equals 60 × Hz only when one revolution is one cycle. A sensor with multiple pulses per turn needs its PPR value. Hertz and rad/s represent different quantities and differ by 2π.

Waveform and period
Formula and calculation
T = 1/f is the time for one complete cycle; ω = 2πf is angular frequency, not an extra frequency unit. Cycle count = f × time. For a rotating shaft, RPM = 60 × pulse frequency ÷ pulses per revolution.
Rotational speed from sensor pulses
Hz to kHz, MHz, and GHz
Hertz is cycles per second. Larger frequency units make audio, radio, processors, and wave values easier to read.
- 1 kHz = 1,000 Hz.
- 1 MHz = 1,000,000 Hz.
- 1 GHz = 1,000,000,000 Hz.
RPM to Hz
Rotational speed can be converted to frequency when one revolution is one cycle.
- Hz = rpm / 60.
- 1 rpm = 0.0166667 Hz.
- 3,600 rpm = 60 Hz.
Where frequency conversion is used
Use frequency conversion for audio, radio, motors, rotating machinery, wave calculations, oscillators, processors, and lab measurements.
- Audio often uses Hz and kHz.
- Wireless and radio specs often use MHz or GHz.
- Mechanical systems often use rpm.

Frequency often connects to wavelength, time, speed, and angular motion.
Frequency Converter FAQ
How do I convert Hz to kHz?
Divide hertz by 1,000. For example, 2,500 Hz equals 2.5 kHz.
How do I convert MHz to Hz?
Multiply megahertz by 1,000,000.
How do I convert rpm to Hz?
Divide rpm by 60 when one revolution equals one cycle.
What does frequency measure?
Frequency measures how many cycles occur per unit of time.
Is frequency related to wavelength?
Yes. For waves, wavelength equals wave speed divided by frequency.
