How are days between dates calculated?
Date difference formula
Each date is converted to a UTC calendar-day number. Subtracting those numbers gives an exact whole-day difference without daylight-saving time errors.
Days between = absolute value of (end day number − start day number)
Calendar years, months and days
The calendar breakdown first counts complete years, then complete months, and finally the remaining days. It does not treat every month as 30 days.
Inclusive and exclusive counting
The exact difference measures the distance between the dates. The counted range separately includes or excludes each boundary date, which is useful for trips, projects and event schedules.
Correct date-difference examples
A complete non-leap year
From January 1 to December 31, 2023, the exact difference is 364 days. Counting both dates gives 365 calendar days.
Part of a year
From March 1 to June 30, 2023, the exact difference is 121 days. Counting both boundary dates gives 122 days.
A range containing leap day
From July 15, 2023 to July 15, 2024, the exact difference is 366 days. Counting both dates gives 367 days.

Does the calculator include the start and end dates?
You can include or exclude each date separately. The exact mathematical difference is always shown independently from the counted range.
Why can the counted days differ from the exact difference?
The exact difference measures distance between two dates. Counted days represent the calendar dates included after applying the two boundary options.
Does daylight-saving time affect the result?
No. The calculator uses UTC calendar-day values rather than local clock hours, so daylight-saving changes do not add or remove a day.
How are weekdays and weekends counted?
Monday through Friday are counted as weekdays, while Saturday and Sunday are counted as weekend days. Public holidays are not removed.
Can the end date be earlier than the start date?
Yes. The calculator shows the same absolute distance and clearly reports that the dates are in reverse order.
