Duration arithmetic, conversion and payroll

Hours and Minutes Calculator

Add or subtract any number of hour-and-minute durations, normalize overflowing minutes, convert the result to decimal hours, minutes and seconds, and optionally estimate pay with payroll rounding.

Build your time calculation

Start with one duration, add as many rows as you need, then choose whether the later rows should be added to or subtracted from the first.

Durations

Minutes may be greater than 59. They are normalized automatically in the result.

Quick add:

Optional payroll estimate

Apply a rounding interval to the final duration and multiply it by an hourly rate. This is an estimate, not an official payroll record.

How to calculate hours and minutes

Convert every duration to minutes, perform the addition or subtraction, then divide the final total by 60 to return to hours and minutes.

    Total minutes = 60 × Hours + Minutes

    Automatic minute normalization

Sixty minutes become one hour. For example, 2 hours 95 minutes is normalized to 3 hours 35 minutes without changing its duration.

    Decimal hours and total minutes

Divide total minutes by 60 for decimal hours. Decimal time is useful for timesheets, invoices and project tracking.

    Payroll rounding

Rounding rules vary by employer and country. Confirm the applicable policy before using a rounded value for wages or official records.

    Practical examples

    2 h 45 min + 1 h 30 min = 4 h 15 min.
    8 h 0 min − 45 min = 7 h 15 min.
    1 h 90 min is normalized to 2 h 30 min.
    7 h 30 min equals 7.5 decimal hours.

    Hours and Minutes Calculator FAQ

Can I add more than two time durations?

Yes. Add as many duration rows as needed. The calculator includes every row in the result and the detailed breakdown.

What happens if I enter more than 59 minutes?

The value is accepted and normalized automatically. For example, 90 minutes becomes 1 hour 30 minutes.

    Can the result be negative?

Yes. In subtraction mode, the calculator preserves a negative result when the later durations exceed the first duration.

    How are decimal hours calculated?

The signed total number of minutes is divided by 60. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 hours.

    How does payroll rounding work?

The final duration is rounded to the nearest selected interval before the optional pay estimate is calculated.

Does this calculator store my entries?

No. Entries are processed locally in your browser. They appear in the URL only when you request a shareable link.
