Useful real-world weight references

Choose a familiar example to load it into the converter. Real objects naturally vary in mass.

Where this mass sits on the scale

The logarithmic scale lets micrograms, grams, people, vehicles and tonnes remain visible in one graphic.

Mass and weight are related, but not identical

Mass describes the amount of matter and stays constant. Weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, so it changes slightly with local gravity. Everyday scales are calibrated to display mass units such as kilograms or pounds.

Tonne, short ton and long ton are different

A metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kilograms. A US short ton is 2,000 pounds, while a UK long ton is 2,240 pounds. Always confirm which ton a source uses.

Ordinary and troy ounces must not be mixed

The avoirdupois ounce used for everyday goods is 28.349523125 grams. A troy ounce used for precious metals is 31.1034768 grams.

Reading stone and pounds

One stone equals exactly 14 pounds. A value such as 11 st 8 lb means eleven complete stone plus eight remaining pounds.

Net, tare and gross explained

Net weight is the product alone, tare is the empty container or packaging, and gross weight is both together. Use the same unit for every field.

Precision, rounding and very small values

Calculations retain full precision and round only the display. Scientific notation keeps microgram and large-tonne results readable.

How mass conversion works

Each unit is stored as an exact or standardized number of kilograms. The converter first changes the source to kilograms and then divides by the target factor.

target value = source value × source-kilogram factor ÷ target-kilogram factor

Important conversion constants

  • 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams
  • 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilogram
  • 1 ounce = 28.349523125 grams
  • 1 stone = 14 pounds
  • 1 carat = 0.2 gram
  • 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams

Weight and mass converter FAQ

How many pounds are in one kilogram?

One kilogram equals approximately 2.2046226218 pounds.

How many kilograms are in one pound?

One international avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilogram.

How do I convert kilograms to stone and pounds?

Divide the weight in pounds by 14. The whole number is stone and the remainder is pounds. The body-weight tab performs this split automatically.

Is a metric tonne the same as a US ton?

No. A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms, a US short ton is about 907.18474 kilograms, and a UK long ton is about 1,016.0469088 kilograms.

Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?

No. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, while an ordinary avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams.

What is tare weight?

Tare is the mass of an empty container or packaging. Gross weight minus tare weight equals net weight.

How many micrograms are in a milligram?

One milligram equals exactly 1,000 micrograms.

Does one kilogram weigh the same everywhere?

Its mass remains one kilogram, but the gravitational force called weight changes slightly by location. Everyday conversion normally uses mass units.

Why does the displayed result use scientific notation?

Very small or very large values can become difficult to read. Scientific notation presents the same value compactly without changing the calculation.
