Everyday Energy Calculator

Electricity Cost Calculator

Estimate how much an appliance costs to run per day, month and year from watts, hours, quantity, electricity rate and standby power.

Appliance power and use

Electricity formula

The main formula is kWh = watts x hours / 1000. Cost is kWh x price per kWh.

For multiple devices, the calculator multiplies usage by quantity.

What to check on a bill

Use the energy price from your utility bill when possible. If your bill has tiered pricing, use an average rate for a practical estimate.

Some appliances cycle on and off, so nameplate watts may be higher than average draw.

Electricity Cost Calculator FAQ

How do you calculate electricity cost?

Multiply watts by hours, divide by 1000 to get kWh, then multiply kWh by your electricity price.

What is kWh?

A kilowatt-hour is the energy used by a 1000 watt device running for one hour.

Why is my utility bill different?

Bills can include taxes, delivery charges, tiered rates, demand charges and fixed service fees.

Can I calculate standby power?

Yes. Enter standby watts and the calculator estimates extra kWh for the hours the device is not actively used.
